Natural Resource Temporary Laborer

Under direct supervision of the Environmental Director, this position involves working closely with elders of the Tribe and other Tribal Citizens of the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California. The Temporary Laborer must be able and willing to accept and receive field assignments on an "as needed basis". This position requires a positive attitude and a professional demeanor.

• Creates a fire safe zone around the homes of Tribal Citizens.
• Installs/uses necessary equipment to prevent or reduce fire risk.
• Sprays herbicide for vegetation management
• Uses proper safety and personal protective equipment.
• Installs erosion control materials.
• Removes solid wastes such as tires and white goods.
• Maintains a daily log of activities.
• Communicates orally and clearly with Tribal Citizens.
• Offer recommendations to the Environmental Director on Natural Resource Concerns.

• Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.
• Knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more.
• Ability to operate chainsaws, weed trimmers, hand tools, and other necessary equipment.
• Ability to work positively with the Tribal community and co-workers in a manner which shows cultural sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
• Ability to identify fire and/or safety hazards.
• Ability to travel to assigned work sites.

High school diploma or GED may be required. Experience working with Native American communities.

The individual must be able to respect and adhere to the most rigid and strict rules of employer/Tribal
Citizen/public citizen practice of confidentiality. Violation of this major employment requirement could lead to
immediate dismissal.

Individual must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license and must be
capable of passing a pre-employment drug screen and a criminal background investigation. The individual must
have the ability to work with people from diverse cultures, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and possess
a basic knowledge of Native American communities and always maintain cultural sensitivity. Temporary
employees must be willing and ready to report for work when there is an assignment to be undertaken. Project
duration will vary from one day to one month. Indian Preference applies to those who are qualified.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is seldom required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is
frequently required to walk, use hands to operate, finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with
hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, employee will
be exposed to various weather conditions or minor hazards (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, biting/stinging
insects, branches, poison oak, uneven terrain, etc.); occasionally will bend, stoop, squat, crouch or kneel. The
employee may also be exposed to EPA approved herbicide chemicals. Specific vision abilities required by this
job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate
to very loud. Elevation may range from 1500 ' to 4,000’. Animals (snakes, rodents, birds, and mammals) may
be encountered. Wearing personal safety equipment (PPB) may be required. When required, basic safety
equipment will be provided.
